This blog post is an update on one of my past posts on the outbreak of E. Coli. In recent months there was a lot of cases of people suffering from an E. Coli infection reported. Investigations began immediately to try and locate the source of this contamination. The problem was believed to be traced to some small fields in California. Trying to find the origin of an outbreak like this is a very difficult and time consuming task.

Now with this new outbreak in Pennsylvania and New Jersey investigations have begun again. This outbreak has shown that E.Coli is becoming a very serious problem, as the number of reported cases grows to sixty-five.

LYONS Senior writer click byline for more stories by writer.First published: Tuesday, November 28, 2006ALBANY — A legal battle has erupted over whether Christopher Porco’s aunt should be allowed to give a victim impact statement at Porco’s upcoming sentencing on charges of murdering his father and attempting to kill his mother.

This article talks about the conflict arising from the question of whether or not “Christopher Porco’s aunt should be allowed to give a victim impact statement at Porco’s up coming sentencing” hearing. Prosecutors, in Albany, have been filing motions to try and settle this issue. Christopher Porco has been convicted of attacking his mother and father with an ax in their Delmar home on November 15, 2004. His mother survived the attack, and has supported him throughout the trial and believes he is innocent. The trial has almost completely divided the entire Porco family and continues to cause problems even today.

I think what people tend to forget is about who is affected by crimes and verdicts. Its not just the accused or the victims. Many people are affected by these events including family and friends, as shown by this case. The Porco case has completely broken up this family. They will never be the same.

Cowboys beat the Undefeated Colts

IRVING, Texas – Maybe the burden of an unbeaten season was becoming too much for the Indianapolis Colts. They sure played like it.Peyton Manning and the Colts looked nothing like their perfect record Sunday, turning the ball over on four of their first six possessions and coming up empty on their final two drives to lose 21-14 to the Dallas Cowboys.

Cowboys hand Colts first loss of season – NFL – MSNBC.com

The Indianapolis Colts were nine and zero (9-0) going into the game yesterday. The Dallas Cowboys on the other hand were five and four (5-4) and trying to win their second game in a row. Tony Romo, the quarterback for Dallas, made just his fourth start in his career and lead his team to a 21-14 win on Sunday. After a rocky start the Cowboys turned the game around and took control to win. The Colts played very sloppy with costly turnovers on four of their first six possessions. “The victory is just as big for Dallas (6-4) as the loss is disappointing for Indianapolis.”

This game I think shows us a lot about people. After a rough start the Dallas Cowboys could have just rolled over and lost the game, but they just kept fighting. With a new quarterback and with their top defensemen out with an injury,  it would be very easy to just give up. But instead they just kept working even harder and staying positive. We can all learn something from this kind of tenacity.

Nickel and Dimed

“How does anyone live on the wages available to the unskilled? How in particular, wee wondered, were the roughly four million women about to be booted into the labor market by welfare reform going to make it on $6 or $7 an hour? Then I said something that I have since had many opportunities to regret: ” Someone ought to do the old- fashioned kind of journalism- you know, go out there and try it for themselves”

I think that this passage from the book makes alot of good points. Poverty has become a serious issue in America, and so the question is, Is it actually possible to live off minimum wage?

Another important point that is present in this quote is about journalism and the media today. Today it is very common to see authors right articles, pieces, and books on things that they don’t understand. They write about topics or issues they haven’t experienced first hand. And one thing that I have realized is that it doesn’t matter how much research you do, you can’t truly understand anything until you experience/live it.

Out of control coach

Knight hasn’t changed … and he never will story Jeff Goodman / fox sports.com posted: 17 minutes ago Bobby Knight hasn’t changed. The Texas Tech head coach was at it again on Monday night, grabbing the chin of Red Raiders sophomore forward Michael Prince during a timeout after the player didn’t appear to be making eye contact with his coach during a timeout

FOX Sports – COLLEGE BASKETBALL – Knight hasn’t changed … and he never will

This article talks about Coach Bobby Knight and the incident that occurred Monday night. Booby Knight is the coach for the Texas Tech red Raiders, one of the better teams in college basketball. On Monday night he grabbed the chin of a player who was not making eye-contact with him while he was talking during a timeout. This is the not the first incident of this coach being out of control either. He has a long history of being overzealous, “out of line”, and overly intense. It has gotten to the point that most players do not even want to play with him anyone. However, they don’t really have much of a choice if they want to play at a high level of play like this. As it stands right now, Knight is eight games way from breaking the coaching win record and will therefore turn over the team to his son Pat next season.

I hate hearing these kinds of sports stories. I have been an athlete all my life, playing soccer, basketball, and lacrosse, so I really can’t stand it when athletes are involved in negative stories like this one. Sports are supposed to competitive, but when is it too much. People involved in the sports world need to realize the damage they are doing. They give sports a bad name and take away from all the good things that sports have to offer.

Women and Food

The excerpt called “Hunger as Ideology” by Susan Bordo was taking about how food is portrayed differently for men and women. This is shown through how advertising and the media as a whole depict food, eating, and appetite. Gender plays a huge role in this issue according to the story. The author, Susan Bordo, gives specific examples from personal experience, and advertising.

I totally agree with what this excerpt is talking about. Women are expected to watch what, how much, and how often they eat; while men are supposed to have “huge” appetites. This is shown through the media. As women, we are constantly bombarded with images of what an ideal women looks like. The women in these images are very skinny and seem to not need to eat to be beautiful.  We are also constantly marketed with diet supplements and other weight losing strategies. This is the type of thing we have to deal with everyday according to Bordo.

This excerpt talks about a  topic that I think everyone can relate to. This is one of the things that make it such a good piece overall.

"Accused of Killing at 13″

Accused of killing at 13Rensselaer teen is indicted on murder charge in a street knifing By BOB GARDINIER, Staff writerClick byline for more stories by writer.First published: Saturday, November 4, 2006TROY — A Rensselaer County grand jury Friday indicted 13-year-old Devan’te Chirse on second-degree murder in the stabbing death of a 15-year-old boy during a street fight in Rensselaer last summer.

Accused of killing at 13 — Page 1 — Times Union – Albany NY

A Rensselaer County grand jury indicted Devan’te Chirse for second-degree murder, on Friday. The 13-year old boy was responsible for the death of 15- year-old Jahiem Twiggs when he stabbed Twiggs. Chirse stabbed the boy in the arm and chest and was taken into custody at the scene. Jahiem Twiggs later died from his injuries at Albany Medical Center. The case is not that clear cut however. Chirse’s defense attorney argued that the boy might have acted in self defense which could lead to a reduced charge/ sentence or the case moving to Family Court. Chirse’s mother, Kesha Chirse is defending her son by saying that he was protecting himself from Twiggs and a big group of teens. She also says that her son was taking medication for hyperactivity for years, but stopped just before the incident. So, it is still unclear the exact circumstances of the crime.

This absolutely “blew my mind.” I can not even fathom why a 13-year-old boy would be carrying around a pocket knife at night. Violence has gotten so out- of- control. It seems like kids don’t even think twice before hurting someone else, and it seems to be happening at a much younger age. Also, it seems like parents are not watching their children as well/much. Should a 13- year-old boy even be out walking around the city of Rensselaer that late at night by himself?

Being a part of a group

Nov 02

After reading an excerpt from “Class Identity and the Politics of Dissent: The Culture of Argument in a Chicago Neighborhood Bar” by Julie Lindquist I realized how everyone likes to be a part of some type of group or community. In the story the author tells us about the group of working class people that drank together everyday at the local bar. The author was a bartender at the time and grew close with this group of individuals. There group was able to have fun and talk freely around one another. Everyone needs a group and community to belong to.

Growing up I was always a part of some group. Whether it was dance class, basketball, lacrosse, or soccer I never felt like i was alone. Sports are definitely one of the easiest way to instantly feel apart of a tight-knit group or community. The amount of time you spend with these individuals allows you to instantly bond and connect with others. The members of a sports team introduce each other to their groups, families, and communities that they might be a part of, as well. These people might have different viewpoints and values as you do, but it doesn’t seem to really make a difference. This is how you learn, through your experiences with people that are different from you.

Authorities are investigating vandalism in Saratoga County this week. The graffiti had political obscenities spray-painted on a large American flag and a nearby American Legion Memorial. The obscenities were visible from the Northway, and the police were notified by these passing motorists. This crime has outraged many people, and there is now a one thousand dollar reward out for any information leading to an arrest(s). The people responsible could face misdemeanor or felony charges of criminal mischief, depending on the flag’s cost.

When I read this article I became very angry. Regardless of your political views, a memorial celebrating the lives of deceased veterans and a large American flag (a symbol of our country) is not the place to express them like that. “The most outrageous thing is they did it on the flag… Its not the place to air your political views and make statements,” Hoffman (the owner of the flag) said. i agree. This act was so repulsive and inappropriate.

The Achievement of Desire

“There is no simple road map through the heart of the scholarship boy”

I think this quote shows how torn he is between the way he feels and the way he acts, which is apparent through the entire piece. Deep down he truly does love his parents, but he also seems to feel embarrassed by the way they talk and act sometimes. At a young age it becomes hard for the boy to truly understand the way he feels. These feelings of being torn are exemplified by the following passage…

“… I heard my father speak to my teacher and felt ashamed of his labored, accented words.     Then guilty for the shame. I felt such contrary feelings.”

The boy is confused about how he is feeling. In school he sees this “American ideal”: well-educated and well-spoken, and at home his parents, the people he is supposed to look up to, do not fit this mold. They speak a very different language,Spanish, and do not have the level of education that he hopes to receive some day. Because of these differences it becomes hard for the boy to figure out exactly what his feeling are. The internal conflict is shown throughout the entire story.
